The Cataloochee Settlement was settled in the early 1830's. Cataloochee is a quiet valley on the fringes of the Smokies, bordered by the Mount Sterling Ridge to the north, and the Cataloochee divide to the south. It is enclosed by the Balsam Mountain to the west, and by the Scottish Mountains to the east. Prior to the park opening in 1934, Cataloochee consisted of farmland maintained by an agrarian community of approximately 1,000 people.

The Park Service maintains The Caldwell and Woody homes, the Will Messer barn, Beech Grove School, and the Palmer Chapel.
The Cataloochee settlement ended in 1928, when the U.S. Government bought the Cataloochee land and established the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934.
